1) What is the very first prop you made? Give us some details… and looking back at it now…
My very first “digital” prop I ever made was my Snow Overlays! (“Gently Falling Snow” and “Flurries”)… I actually created them for ME to use, to add more snow to my winter photos… I was honest with my Facebook fans about what I used to make it look like it was snowing in my image(s), and everyone loved the idea and requested them! So I gave the Snow Overlays away as Freebies on my fan page and they were a big hit!
2) What got you into the photography prop vendor world?
Besides making digital products for myself to use for ease and convenience on my end, what got me into the photography prop vendor world was a strong desire to help fellow photographers with their editing workflow, creativity and vision… I knew in using other products out there how much they aided in my editing excitement and final image execution, so I wanted to offer Overlays, Textures, Digital Backgrounds and Lightroom Presets to help others achieve their desired goal! Selling my products are a way to give them new life and a home in the fine art images of talented photographers!
I LOVE to travel on day trips or out-of-town vacations where I stock up on images of animals/wildlife and cool landscape scenery anyplace I go! I am addicted to shooting the products and creating them for everyone to use! Instead of all these images just sitting on my desktop, I wanted to put them to good use!
I also love to make people happy and I want these products do that for fellow artists! Editing needs to be fun and exciting and through positive feedback on my products I know that is happening!
3) Let’s have fun… any extraordinary talent, or obsession, that you’d like to share with us? IE: can you touch your tongue to your nose, or do you snowboard, maybe run marathons or like to mow the lawn in your bikini ? 🙂
An extraordinary talent, or obsession, I’d like to share with you all is that I LOVE to write music! If I was not a photographer I would want to write the scores and soundtracks for motion picture movies! I enjoy playing my piano in my spare time (spare time… what is that)? Also, I can scream so loud I can make the doorbell ring inside the house! AND… my husband (and everyone!) think I am nuts, but after I make toast, I immediately put it in the freezer for 10 minutes to “cool off” to I can then apply my butter or cream cheese – I do not like warm toast! Oh, and I do not mind tarantulas, but am terrified of teeny tiny spiders… go figure!
4) Tell us about YOU… personally. Are you a wife, mother, sister friend. Do you enjoy sports, wine tasting, avid book reader.
We’d love to get to know YOU better…
I am an “Army Wife” and am so proud of my husband for serving over 25 years in the Army National Guard! He is also the biggest supporter of my business and I have no clue how I can do all the work I do without his help – he cooks and cleans and shops so I can go on photo sessions, edit images and create my products! He also comes along with me to help on shoots (carrying my camera gear and props, etc.). I am also a daughter – an only child – and I absolutely love my parents!! My Mom is truly my best friend and all my family and friends are my biggest supporters and cheerleaders in all I do! And I am “Mommy” to the two most adorable hamsters “Frankie & Franklin” who came home with me after I photographed some Mice for my “Cinderella Inspired Set” (they were in the cage above at the pet store, and I fell in love!). I enjoy watching horror movies, reading, hiking and dinners out with my best friends!
5) Share with us your ALL TIME #1 FAVORITE image in your portfolio.
My all time #1 Favorite image in my portfolio would be my once-in-a-lifetime capture of this Snowy Owl in Flight taken in December 2013 near my home! It went viral and is how I got on the map as “Owl Whisperer”!
6) What is your FAVORITE prop to make?
My favorite prop to make is animal/wildlife Overlays! I love photographing critters, and then it is fun to know they will end up in a photographers image!!
7) Any fabulous formative info you can “share” with fellow vendors who are just starting out? We could always use inspiration… so we’d love a “pep talk” !
For fellow vendors just starting out, first of all, just be YOU! Be uniquely you and you will stand out amongst all the others! Put your own spin and vision on whatever it is you are creating and you will be just fine! And research – look at images and other props that are similar to what you make or in your style, and you will be motivated and inspired to create something even better or different! Also, ask questions and seek guidance – there are so many kind people who will teach you and help you. And most importantly, you must LOVE what you do and what you are making, because if you do not have the passion for it, no one will want it! You need to make yourself happy first so you can make everyone else happy!!
8) How did you “name” your prop shop? We love to hear how all of these creative shop names came to be…
My business name “Captured By Carrie Photography” came about in 1996 when I opened my business and got my DBA (“Doing Business As”)… I was trying to play off my first name and connected “Captured” to capturing images! It was a catchy phrase, and everyone liked it! Then I added “& Product Shop” to the end once I expanded what I offer!
