Ready for another installment of our famous PROP JUNKIE OF THE MONTH?
Prepared to fall in love with yet another amazing and uber talented photographer?

Then meet our new love, Kristen Mackey of <a href="http://www.sonkissedphotography.com/blog"target=”_blank">SonKissed Photography!!!

1. So Ms Kristen, newborn goddess and prop junkie … lets introduce YOU and get the junkies “in” on your work! What is your photography site, blog, and any other sites you own that you’d like to share with us?
Thank you so much for having me, what an honor! My blog is <a href="http://www.sonkissedphotography.com/blog"target=”_blank” >www.sonkissedphotography.com/blog and facebook is <a href="http://www.facebook.com/sonkissedphotographykristenmackey"target="_blank">www.facebook.com/sonkissedphotographykristenmackey. I do have a site but it basically sits there to house my blog.

2. Your newborn photography is quit extensive …. how did YOU get started in the photography business, and when?
I began my journey in photography after my son was born in 2007. I had a bad experience at a studio chain and thought to myself, “I can do this!” I NEVER in a million years thought that wanting to take better pictures of my son would turn into a full blown career. I’m one of those that has to learn something inside and out so I took a few photography classes at a local camera store and became addicted with manipulating my camera into doing what I wanted it to do. I loved playing in Photoshop but when I realized that this was more than just a hobby and taking better pictures of my son was when I photographed my first newborn in 2008. I was still working full-time and after my first newborn session I kept getting more and more interest from clients. It was a domino effect from that point on with people referring me. I am truly loving every second of it!

3. And we have to ask, our typical question…… WHAT DO YOU SHOT WITH, and what is your favorite lens?
I’m a diehard Canon girl. Yes, I have the annoying focus issues but when that focus is sharp, it’s SO yummy! I may overshoot and wear my camera out too quickly but there’s no way I’d ever switch! My favorite lens… well I photograph newborns with my 50 1.2L and love it but I do love my 100 2.8L macro as well so I’d have to say it’s a tie. I have the 24-70 2.8L as well but it never sees the light of day. Would love to get the 135 at some point.

4. On your blog (and site), you cover mostly newborns.. they are an obvious favorite (mine too!). What drew you to newborns, and why?
Gosh, I think it’s just that newness and if you’re a mother I think it’s just natural to love on and nurture a new being. I do my fair share of snuggling those sweet babies when they’re in my studio. We have two kiddos and do not plan to have anymore so I think working with newborns gives me exactly what I need to cure my baby fever. But honestly, I love capturing that fleeting moment for every family that walks through my door. I’m both flattered and honored when I am chosen for the job. I do offer a Baby Plan that covers baby’s first year. I love watching them grow!

5. Do you have a favorite newborn prop that you use in most sessions? (ie certain blanket or hat, etc) And where in daylights do you store all of those delicious blankets & other props you show?!?!
I am really in love with the backdrops from Couture Props right now (<a href="http://www.facebook.com/pages/Couture-Props/115280685226117"target=”_blank” >*click here*) and I do knit so I try to knit up something special for every newborn session. I’m really loving bonnets with matching blankets.

6. Do you have a favorite “PROP SHOP” that you regularly work with? Please share , and give them some nice bragging rights with a url …
Loving the backdrops from Couture Props (<a href="http://www.facebook.com/pages/Couture-Props/115280685226117"target=”_blank” >Couture Props). I think I have one in every color, teehee! I love unique hats and my go-to girl for those is Jen from lil owl knitts (<a href="http://www.facebook.com/lilowlknitts"target=”_blank” >Lil Owl Knits) She spins all of her yarn into the most yummy goodness you’ve ever seen. I love the creativity from Lisa at SweetLove Creates (<a href="http://www.facebook.com/sweetlovecreates"target=”_blank” >http://www.facebook.com/sweetlovecreates). She blows my mind with what she comes up with; so incredibly talented. I love the simplicity from Heather at HeatherBell Hats (<a href="http://www.facebook.com/HeatherBellHats"target=”_blank” >http://www.facebook.com/HeatherBellHats). Her creations are so pure and gorgeous. I love Heather from Woolywishes (<a href="http://www.facebook.com/pages/Woolywishes/193307734022795"target=”_blank” >http://www.facebook.com/pages/Woolywishes/193307734022795). Not only is she crazy talented and always comes up with new items (I don’t think I’ve ever seen her post the same hat twice), she has the biggest heart. And my new favorite must have are Shanelle’s boa blankets, they’re amazing for stuffing baskets full of texture. Her Facebook is <a href="http://www.facebook.com/pages/Shanelle-Nicole-Photography/289666116236"target=”_blank”>http://www.facebook.com/pages/Shanelle-Nicole-Photography/289666116236. Just love her and all of these girls. OH and where do I store all of my props?? I have a loft studio that has a big shooting area as well as a big room. Right now everything is just thrown in there because I’m too tired after a newborn session to tidy it up, ha! All of my hats (I have over 100…) are stored in the linen closet in the bathroom. I did have them in bins but now they’re just tossed about the closet. Sigh…

7. Is your yummy studio out of your home, or do you have a store front? Your lighting looks beautiful.. so we’d love to hear if you shoot studio or natural light….
I have a loft studio located in the heart of Downtown Tulsa. I love my studio but it is quite the drive for me, especially when I’m there 4-5 times a week. We are in the process of selling our home and buying a home on an acreage to build a studio. Now that would be convenient! I will be the first to admit that I was a natty light snob. I only shot natural light up until Septemberish when I traveled to California for a mentoring session. She used studio light and I was shocked when I looked at my images SOOC and how consistent they were. Those of us that shoot natural light, it is kind of a maddening when you have a partly cloudy day and we’re constantly battling those clouds, adjusting SS, etc. With studio light, I can shoot in the evenings if I want to. I have been shooting studio light for about 2 months now and love it! I do have yummy west light in my studio so if I ever have the urge to go all natty, I can!

8. Ok… those triplets… you ROCKED THAT SHOOT! Tell us more… how was it handling triplets.. a lot of composites? And did you purchase all those darling props or did the mommy bring them? (If you purchased, where are the bonnets and headbands from??)

Thank you! Not one composite that entire session. Those girls were ROCK STARS and little sleepy heads! Oh and did I mention that they were born on my birthday so we definitely had a bond, ha! I have to give mega props to my two assistants for the day. It could not have been possible without them. So Bobbie Yocum from Yocum Photography and her assistant, Rachel… thank you! I highly recommend having one person per baby when photographing multiples so mom and dad can catch a little break. The crowns were from Modern Baby Photography (<a href="http://modernbabyphotography.bigcartel.com/product/little-crown"target=”_blank”>http://modernbabyphotography.bigcartel.com/product/little-crown), hats are from lil owl knitts (http://www.facebook.com/lilowlknitts) and the darling headbands are from Glamour and Glitz (<a href="http://www.facebook.com/Glamourglitzbaby?ref=ts"target=”_blank”>http://www.facebook.com/Glamourglitzbaby?ref=ts).

9. As photographers are curious, and we love to brag about our mentors… so who are a few fellow photographers whose work you adore , and keeps you inspired (like you inspire us!) ?
Gosh, I have so many. I find myself drawn to those whose style is not completely like mine. So here we go – I love simply by suzy. Her posed newborns are beautiful and her lifestyle newborn sessions are incredible. I stink at lifestyle but I drool over lifestyle newborn sessions. Rachael Myers. Amazing person, business savvy and rocks those lifestyle sessions as well. Shannon Dodd. Love looking at her images both newborns and outdoor sessions. Baby as Art. Who are we kidding? Their processing is so yummy it makes me hungry for more! Kristen Cook – her posing and black and whites make my heart smile.

10. What would you call your personal style. Are you a vintage chicka, or a modern diva… maybe a home town girl or plan ole geekie gal
I’m a lover. I am totally in love with my kids, my husband and my job. I love to make people happy. I’m a peacemaker. I’m not a pushover and I stand my ground but I like to keep the peace. I love to give back.

11. I LOVED YOUR BLANKET DYE TUTURIAL!!! Please share the link with everyone else here, and include a few pictures so we can share what a great idea it is!
You bet! The link for the blanket dye is <a href="http://www.sonkissedphotography.com/blog/archives/2521"target=”_blank”>http://www.sonkissedphotography.com/blog/archives/2521 and I recently did a DIY floor tutorial for photography and you can find that here: <a href="http://www.sonkissedphotography.com/blog/archives/2545"target=”_blank”>http://www.sonkissedphotography.com/blog/archives/2545

12. Any fabulous information you can “share” with fellow photographers, just starting out in the newborn business ?
I would just say patience and practice for sure. I’ve been photographing newborns going on 4 years and I still learn something new at every single newborn session or how to better a process. Keeping their environment warm is HUGE when photographing newborns. The womb is somewhere around 98* Fahrenheit and when they’re brand new they still aren’t able to fully regulate their body temperature. I keep my room at 85*.

13. Tell us more about KRISTEN… Who are YOU? Other than a photographer.. are you a mother, wife, other sort of artist?
I have two feisty little kiddos. My son will be 5 this year and he is a little firecracker. My daughter will turn 2 next month and she’s my little cuddle bug. I adore being a mother and I what I adore even more is being able to stay home with them. What an incredible gift that is. I’m a knitting freak. I have a closetful of yarn that I need to knit up but there’s that little thing called time that seems to always get in the way. I’m totally addicted to it once I get going. My husband is constantly putting away my swift and winder (what you use to wind skeins into those perfect balls) that I attach to our bar in the kitchen. And the kiddos are always playing catch with my balls of yarn. Fun times in the Mackey house!

14. Lastly… any fun or extraordinary talent, or obsession, that you’d like to share with us? IE: can you touch your tongue to your nose, or do you snowboard, maybe run marathons?
I’ve been involved in some marathon newborn sessions but that’s about the extent of my involvement in marathons, ha! I can talk with my mouth shut and I can clap my hands without clapping them together. So they just flap at a high rate of speed and clap against my wrists, pretty hilarious!

Thank you SO much for having me. What a fun interview and an honor to be a part of the Prop Insanity blog.

Hello Everyone and Welcome to 2012!! I can’t believe it’s already here and we have so much to look forward to this year!!

Before I explain a little about myself I am in need also for models for my Denver Workshop this Thursday and Friday! They need to be under 2 weeks old and will receive 5 free high resolution digial images for their time! If you know anyone please shoot me an email at c_k_photography@yahoo.com

Now to introduce myself

For those of you who don’t know me, I’m Cherise Kiel! I am a mother of 3 beautiful children (7, 4 & 2) and a wife to an wonderful man and soldier. I am also the Owner/Photographer at Cherise Kiel Photography and I also put on Newborn Posing Workshops at Precious Beginnings Newborn Workshop.

I absolutely LOVE what I do and am honored when my clients allow me to be a part of such important times and trust me to capture those memories for them. I am a natural light photographer, but I did work in a high end portrait studio for 4 years, so I am very familiar with studio lights as well.

I decided to put on newborn workshops last year when I myself was looking at attending one to improve my skills and get some fresh ideas. However, when I saw the prices of those workshops, I just about died, lol! As a small business, I just didn’t have $1200-$1500 (plus travel costs) to attend a 1 day workshop So after much thought and feedback, I decided to put one on myself, and make it as affordable as possible for us photographers who want to learn and grow without breaking the bank.

The Precious Beginnings Newborn Workshop is a 2 day workshop full of information on safety, posing, soothing, handling, marketing, pricing, post-processing and much more! There is a TON of information provided as well as live models, and for ONLY $600!!! This is such an awesome deal! Below is my schedule for 2012! Since I am an army wife and I never know when my husbands schedule is changing, these are the only dates available for this year! I have opened up all of my dates for registration, and it’s never too early or late to schedule! I am only taking 8 spots per location to ensure more hands on time and a better learning experience Once the spots are filled, they are gone, so don’t hesitate!!

2012 Schedule

January 5-6: Denver, Colorado

March 12-13: Dallas, Texas

May 28-29: Seattle, Washington

July 9-10: Virginia Beach, Virginia

September 6-7: Mobile, Alabama

November 10-11: Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Thank you so much and I hope to see you at one of my workshops!!

Below are some photos from my Ohio Workshop this past October!!

Your photography is simply stunning, and the props you use are endless …. how did YOU get started in the photography business, and when?

I officially started my business in 2009. I never studied photography in school but for as long as I can remember I have always LOVED photography and have had an affinity for newborn photography! My best friend once reminded me how I had an Anne Geddes calendar on my wall in college and how I always loved looking at those sweet babies. When I initially started I was shooting sessions that were mostly families and children. Soon after I started to hone in on newborn photography, and now I would estimate that my business is 98% newborn studio photography.

And we have to ask, our typical question…… WHAT DO YOU SHOOT WITH, and what is your favorite lens?

I currently shoot with the Nikon D3s. I initially started out with the Nikon D300s and moved up within a few months to the Nikon D3s. My favorite lens is the 50mm 1.4 and I shoot with that lens 90% of the time during my sessions. In every newborn session I also always use my 35mm 1.4 and my 60mm 2.8 macro.

On your blog (and site), you cover babies, bellies, families, newborns, (celebrities!) etc… what is your favorite subject, and why?

I am absolutely drawn to newborn photography. Like I mentioned above, I have always had such a fondness for newborn portraiture. Being there in that moment shooting a newborn session is the best “job” to have because it simply isn’t a job, it’s my passion! I look forward with such anticipation every day to when the new parents walk thru my studio door with their tiny little newborn. Each one of those babies has such a unique personality and I treasure the time I get to spend with every one of them. I feel lucky to have the opportunity to capture the sweetest beginnings of life for my clients. I know the images captured will create such nostalgia for them and knowing they have those moments captured is priceless to me.

Because you have such a wide range of subjects, do you have a favorite prop that you use in most sessions? Or what are your favorite props for each age group?

I love keeping things simple so I don’t get too crazy when it comes to the props I use, but I will confess that I am ALWAYS looking for new items! I use my beanbag in every newborn session so I really love changing things up with different backdrops, swaddle wraps and headbands that go along with the beanbag posing!

Do you have a favorite “PROP SHOP” that you regularly work with? Please share…

My FAVORITE “Prop Shop” would definitely be the Online Store I just opened!! I consistently have other photographers asking me where I get certain fabrics, headbands, swaddle wraps etc. Since most of my business does come from newborn photography I decided to open an online store where you can find everything I use! (minus the bean bag!)

The website is: http://www.julierollinsphotography.com/shop.

My online store is where you can find the following items I tend to use in every one of my newborn sessions: Photoshop Actions, Swaddles & Wraps, Backdrops & Fur, Wrap Sets, Newborn Crowns and Headbands & Hats! This store is also where you can sign up for my Personalized Mentoring Sessions as well as for the Love Marriage and Baby Carriage Workshop.

You MUST have a studio… your newborn images and the backdrops… props… seem endless. Tell us more about your studio. Is it out of your home, or a business location?

I do have a studio!!! My studio is located in San Pedro, CA which is in the Los Angeles area. It’s the perfect location because I am situated right between the Los Angeles and Orange County areas so my clients come in from so many different directions. The studio was a must for me given that our home is not big enough for one. I consider the studio my home away from home, the space is not big but it is the perfect location for all of my newborn photography. I also shoot some of my baby and child sessions in the studio and I shoot a ton of my family sessions around the outside of my studio. I am located in a downtown area so there are some great old buildings and textures to shoot against that make for the perfect outdoor shooting locations.

Your processing is also gorgeous. Do you have a favorite action or processing that you use on your images?

Right away when I really got in to photography, I came across the MCP Actions website. At that time I was clueless on how to use Photoshop so I signed up for all of the Photoshop editing classes that they had to offer. What I appreciated most was that their online classes were not a means of selling their actions. Jodi’s classes teach you how to use your tools in Photoshop so that you can do your own editing without having to necessarily purchase her actions. I always recommend these online classes to everyone that is starting out with Photoshop, because I feel they are such a great foundation to learn from.

After I finished the classes I immediately started to create my own actions, or as I called them “recipes”, to cut down on my editing time. Over time I modified and refined the recipes, but I remained pretty consistent with the basic formula for these actions and I do sell them in my online store. I always start out with my Newborn Basics Action which is the cornerstone for all of my editing. I like to keep things simple and I love the flexibility that my actions provide during my editing process. My Newborn Basics Action comes with seven adjustment layers that you can tailor to your own individual taste simply by adjusting the opacity of each layer. Once I run my Newborn Basics Action on all of my images I then follow that with my Newborn Sweetness and my Newborn Softness Actions on each image and depending on the shot I will then finish the image up with one of the actions from my Tranquility Collection.

As photographers we are curious, and we love to brag about our mentors… so who are a few fellow photographers whose work you adore?

I am a HUGE fan of so many different photographers and many of them don’t even specialize in newborn photography! I absolutely LOVE Beth Jansen’s work as well as Joyce Smith and Marla and Shane’s! I love all of the bright colors and pristine black and white photography and I am inspired by how fresh and timeless all of their work is! I love my friend Kamee June’s work and am always so impressed with how dreamy and beautiful her images are! In the newborn photography arena there are so many great photographers that are always so inspiring. I love the work that sisters Kelley Ryden and Tracy Raver produce together, it’s always incredible! I also really love the black and white newborn photography from Kerianne Brown, her images are always so soft and clean!

Of course, we have to ask more about your CELEBRITY PHOTOGRAPHER status…. please, do tell us more… (drools on keyboard)…

Living in the Los Angeles area does have it’s perks and YES we have seen our share of celebrities in the studio! The only downside to that is many times we can’t publish the images and have to keep the details confidential but it is still so fun to meet everyone and every single one of them has been so incredible to work with. I was also invited to attend an event this year at one of the gifting suites for the Academy Awards and while I was there I had the opportunity to meet TONS of celebrities! It truly was such a fun and exciting event. I blogged all of the details from the event and have tons of photos with the different celebrities, so you will have to head over to my site and check all the posts out at: http://julierollinsphotography.com/category/photography-business/

Any fabulous information you can “share” with fellow photographers, just starting out?

My biggest advice I always tell everyone is to invest in your education. I always try to provide my clients with the highest level of quality service and I myself have invested in many workshops, mentoring programs, and online classes because I firmly believe in the value they have added to my photography skills and my business as a whole. I absolutely LOVE attending workshops and always come away with so many fresh and new ideas and they are always such a boost to my business! The internet provides so many great online resources for photographers and I love signing up for online classes. I know there is such a temptation to invest in all of the “stuff” you need for your business but the most rewarding investment for me has hands down always been in my education. Some of my favorite online resources are: Kelby Training, Creative Live and MCP Actions.

Who are YOU? Other than a photographer.. are you a mother, wife, rock star, lion tamer.. other sort of artist?

I am the “Queen Juggler” in our family, lol! I have been married for 12 years and I am the mom of 3 littles (7yrs, 3yrs & 2yrs). We have a very busy household, so balancing family time and my growing photography business and newly launched online store can definitely be challenging at times but I love every second of it!

Lastly… any fun or extraordinary talent, or obsession, that you’d like to share with us? IE: can you touch your tongue to your nose, or do you snowboard, maybe run marathons?

Hmmmm…not sure about any extraordinary talents, but I do have three main obsessions!! In order they are: Kiehl’s Lip Balm #1, Salt and Starbucks! I have little pots of the Kiehl’s lip balm in almost every room of my house and ALWAYS with me! I love salt so much that I carry a travel salt shaker with me in my purse wherever I go, yes – they do make travel salt shakers and that little shaker was one of the best gifts I have ever received!! Lastly I always try to start my mornings off with a stop at Starbucks for a Venti Latte and Trenta Passion Tea – I love having both a cold drink and a hot drink at the same time!

WINTER IS ALMOST HERE!
And that means getting creative for winter newborn sessions.

While surfing PINTEREST the other day, I came across a photo that was so sweet, so stunning… so PERFECT for a winter newborn shoot, that I had to reach out to the photographer who captured this precious little image. Lucky for me… the photographer is also a friend of Prop Insanity, the wonderful Kristen Caldwell!

And lucky for ALL OF US.. Kristen was happy to share how she captured this image…. pretty much step by step…. pictures included *happy dancing* !

So without further hesitation.. from the speedily typing hands of the wonderful Kristen Caldwell.. here is her HOW TO~ Winter Newborn.

“HELLO PROP JUNKIES!
I would be more than happy to tell you how I did that particular shot…

I’ve attached a SOOC (below) of the image, then the final edit…

We have a craft store local here called Pat Catans… I went there and found the branches (it was just one bundle) and then I went in the Christmas section and found garland that had silver and pearl balls… I just laid that on the branches to hang…

My sister is my assistant for all my newborn sessions so it is her hand that you see holding the branch to the right as she spots the baby… I shot this on a roll of darker grey seamless paper…

ALSO included is an image of the actual stool I used in the shot… I just threw an ivory faux fur fabric over it, making the one side higher than the other for the babies head and then threw a large sheepskin throw from IKEA on top of that…

In the SOOC, you will see some kinks in the paper which are NOT ideal but it was the last of the grey seamless I had on hand and I just cloned those minor imperfections out in PS… I ALWAYS use Florabella actions for EVERYTHING… For this particular image, I enhanced it using the new Florabella Classic Workflow… lightened up the midtones a bit and hit it with some contrast and clarity and a bit of warmth…

SOOC probably looks a bit under-exposed but I shoot EVERYTHING under-exposed… I feel by doing so, I have less of a chance of blowing out any highlights (especially since there was white fur being used here) and more of a chance at recovering details… I shoot with a Sony A900 and 90% of the time I have my Carl Zeiss 24-70 f.2.8 on… rarely does this lens leave my camera body… And I HAVE to throw this in, but I RARELY shoot on seamless and almost ALWAYS shoot using one of my many Bad Sass Backdrops! But for this image, I wanted it to be classic hence the use of seamless paper… ”

~Kristen Caldwell

AND HEY PROP JUNKIES! Check out Kristens other obsession.. Bad Sass Backdrops! They just launched a new collection… Itty Bitty Sass Backdrops? They are the same quality as their full size Bad Sass Backdrops, only smaller and perfect for crafters to shoot their products on to enhance their images for their Etsy/Big Cartel shop… Check out the below pull back and edited shot… our friend Heather Joiner of the famous JoCo Couture sent the images to Bad Sass, as she used them to photograph her gorgeous goods!

Kristen

I am also doing 4-week Critiques on the Chic Critique Forum

2) Your photography is quite fashionable & chicy …. how did YOU get started in the photography business, and when?

When I was a little girl, I was fanatical about fashion and magazines because I wanted to be a supermodel. I’d simulate the poses and ideas in fashion magazines with my hot-pink film camera from Kmart. In order to build my modeling portfolio, I went to modeling school. There I learned about posing in front of a camera, applying make up for headshots, interviewing skills, and walking on the runway. When I finally accepted that my legs were just too darn short to be a supermodel, I found myself behind the camera instead of in front of it.

3) And we have to ask, our typical question…… WHAT DO YOU SHOT WITH, and what is your favorite lens?
I photograph with a Nikon d700 and do video with the 5D Mark ii.

4) On your blog (and site), you cover babies, bellies, tots & teens. What is your favorite subject, and why?
I LOOOVE to photograph newborns and seniors. I guess I like to get em when they are coming home and leaving home -LOL!

5) Tell us more about your “Cinematic Sessions”?
My “Cinematic Sessions” has really set me apart from other local photographers is very popular with clients. It’s just so fun to tell a client’s story with videography and photography combined!

Here is an example of a recent Cinematic Session:

5) Because you have such a wide range of subjects, do you have a favorite prop that you use in most sessions? Or what are your favorite props for each age group?
I use my patchwork quilt as a “universal” prop in the majority of my outdoor sessions but I do have favorite props for each age group too. For newborns, I love me some bowls & baskets along with simple hats & headbands. For tots, I love my doll stroller and retro Red Rider tricycle…gives ‘em something to do. For teens, my favorite prop has been the oversized balloons. For couples I love bringing along my cruiser bike.

6) Do you have a favorite “PROP SHOP” that you regularly work with?
Please share… I get my newborn bowls from Marketing and Props

7) Do you have a studio, or shoot specifically on location? If you have a studio, tell us more about it… if you shoot on location, let us know your favorite places to shoot…
I shoot outdoors in fields for pretty much all of my subjects (except newborns). I transform my dining room into a “ghetto studio” in my home for newborn sessions but it gets the job done!

I LOVE that lil vintage suitcase seen in your pictures.. is that a prop you own, or a clients?
I bought that adorable suitcase at an antique store.

9) As photographers we are curious, and we love to brag about our mentors… so who are a few fellow photographers whose work you adore?
I adore the clean and creamy look of Jose Villa. I also love Stephanie Williams’ images.

10) What would you call your personal style. Are you a vintage chicka, or a modern diva… maybe a home town girl?!
My style has always been “classy but sassy”. I’ll add a killer piece of jewelry/shoes to a classic shirt and a posh pillow to my decorating. I like things to look romantic and ornate.

11) Of course, we have to ask more about your BUSINESS MAKEOVERS for Photographers (Francypants Academy, DARLING!)… tell us the goodie info we NEED to know!…
Well I’ve pretty much BEEN THERE, DONE THAT and made every mistake possible in the past 10 years. Now I love to share what I’ve learned with other photographers to help them beautify their business too.

Francypants Academy is a 6-week business makeover program for beginning and advanced photographers who want to make a life and a living doing what they love.

12) Any fabulous information you can “share” with fellow photographers, just starting out?
Don’t compare yourself to other photographers…Compare your work to your work. Look at your images and find out why you love some of your images and why you don’t and then work to improve them.

13) Who are YOU? Other than a photographer.. are you a mother, wife, other sort of artist?
I am a Mama of 4 wild n’ crazy kids (just had baby #4 on Oct. 4th!)

14) Lastly… any fun or extraordinary talent, or obsession, that you’d like to share with us?
Um…I love food and I can stick my entire fist in my mouth. Not a good combo, I guess!

Ready for our next installment of PROP JUNKIE and PHOTOGRAPHER of the Month, here at PI? Well.. lets not hold back.. here she is! Get ready to swoon…

1) So Ms Ali , lets introduce YOU and get the junkies “in” on your work! What is your photography site, blot, and any other sites you own that you’d like to share with us?

I’m a wife of 14 years and mother of 4 children. I enjoy my job tremendously and many of my clients over the years have become lifelong friends as well.

website – www.glowportraitsstudio.com
blog – www.glowportraitbyalli.com
facebook – www.facebook.com/glowportraits

2) Your photography , newborns particular, make me giddy …. how did YOU get started in the photography business, and when?

I’ve always had a passion for children, and photography. So it was inevitable that the two would eventually collide. It was from shooting my own children as newborns that spurred the idea to shoot images for others in a professional manner; so about six years ago I made the investment in a studio and business. This provided me the means of capturing images for parents that they wouldn’t be able to realize themselves.

3) And we have to ask, our typical question…… WHAT DO YOU SHOT WITH, and what is your favorite lens?

I have been a Canon shooter, and have always felt comfortable with their equipment and the images they deliver. These days the body I lean most heavily on is my 5D markII. The full frame has such phenomenal resolution and it really brings out the very best of my fast prime lenses. I typically shoot in the 50mm range, but recently I have discovered a great love for my 35mm f1.4L. It is so incredibly tack sharp and puts me at the ideal distance for posing and controlling newborns when shooting.

4) On your blog (and site), we see alot of newborns.
Are they your favorite subject, and why?

I admit, I am addicted to babies. Newborns are all such beautiful and precious little warm bundles, who can resist them? I love all of the three “B’s” that I shoot, Bellies, Boudoir, and Babies, but as a mother of four myself, newborns bring be such joy its like a present to myself every time I get to shoot one. EVERY baby I have the opportunity to photograph is amazing and a blessing. I truly can’t imagine anything more enjoyable

5) Being you shoot alot of newborns , do you have a favorite prop that you use in most sessions? Or what are your favorite props for each age group? (ie: hats, buckets, etc)

My style is such that I really want to showcase the newborns themselves, so I typically use a beanbag set up with a variety of textured blankets. For me there is an almost organic correctness to the image of a tiny baby snug in soft fabrics. It also allows me a “canvas” on which to feature the little boy/girl, which I will often accent with a tiny headband or unique hat. I also just love showing how tiny they are at that time, so I employ a few different rustic looking buckets. Setting up a baby in a bucket lends scale to the final image and its also just so darn cute. When I’m working with older babies who can sit, I keep things simple with the babe on the floor on a blanket or basket with some of the unique backdrops I have in my collection.

6) Do you have a favorite “PROP SHOP” that you regularly work with? Please share… and their shop links so we can shop too!

Yes I do! Lemondrop Stop backdrops *click here* are just amazing. Over the years I have used products from a variety of different companies, with varying success. As a studio photographer having floors and backdrops that are glare free is extremely important. Lemondrop Stop’s products are durable, texture and glare free and rich in colour and design. I would recommend them to any photographer, no matter what the subject if they employ muslins or backdrops of any kind.

As I mentioned before I use a number of unique hats and headbands in baby shoots. Those incredible pieces come from Rain Drop’s Photography Props *click here*. Everything she makes is so adorable, I just drool over them.

7) I see that you in studio… which is fabulous! Alot of newborn photographers use “natural” lighting… it is interesting and lovely that you use strobe lighting. Tell us a bit about your studio and the gear you use to capture those precious shots ?

I love natural lighting as well, but I prefer the control I get in a studio environment. I have experimented over the years with several different lighting setups and currently use Alien Bees equipment. They are fast, powerful and a great overall product. I am able to simulate “natural” light, and also control the colour temperature and direction to suit each individual subject best.

I love how you keep your props simple and organic looking. Is this something you love, or your client ask for particularly?

I think that my clients come to me because of my particular style. I shoot most things the way that I see them, the way that appeals to me the most. It is a hallmark of my product and the client base has always seemed to respond positively. I am not against requests or desires of a client, and will always listen and incorporate what they seek. I personally prefer an uncluttered style where the focus of the final image is directed strongly back to the subject. I love simplicity and a great balance with negative space.

9) As photographers are curious, and we love to brag about our mentors… so who are a few fellow photographers whose work you adore?

Oh there have been so many photographers who inspire and drive me, and there will be many more I’m sure. Photography is constantly evolving and I intend on evolving along with it. My current inspiration however, oddly enough, comes from a pair of wedding photographers; White Linen Photography *click here. They are natural light photographers who’s light, soft and airy style inspires me tremendously. In addition my friend Caralee Case Photography always amazes me with her incredible use of colour.

10) What would you call your personal style. Are you a vintage chicka, or a modern diva… maybe a home town girl?!

Haha, are you talking about me, or my photography? I’m a perfect angel!

11) OF course, you arent limited to studio settings either. For instance, this beautiful “Engagement Session” you recently shot… *this one*…..
Where did you find this BEAUTIFUL setting?!

I live in the northern reaches of British Columbia, and there just happens to be almost unlimited beautiful vistas. In the very brief periods I get between family obligations and work schedules I try to get out and find unique spots with great light angles and engaging backgrounds. The world is beautiful everywhere if you look at it in the way of trying to see its beauty. I would say that about anywhere, I encourage photographers to travel their own habitat, be it urban or rural and just see the beauty around them.

12) Any fabulous information you can “share” with fellow photographers, just starting out?

Practice and patience, and be realistic about their motivation – there are many other ways to make money that are more efficient that photography! Treat photography as a passion first, shoot what you love because you love it. The truth in any form of “Art as an occupation” is to work it because you want to, and allow the financial end to fall into place.

13) Who are YOU? Other than a photographer.. are you a mother, wife, other sort of artist?

Well as I mentioned earlier, I have a family of my own. I am a very proud and happy mother of four wonderful children. Being a full time parent in a house full of kids is tasking and time absorbing, but they are caring and helpful and respect the fact that editing is time consuming.

14) Lastly… any fun or extraordinary talent, or obsession, that you’d like to share with us? IE: can you touch your tongue to your nose, or do you snowboard, maybe run marathons?

Wow, nothing that exciting I have a personal trainer at the gym and I jog now and then, nothing consistent!

HEY PROP JUNKIES! Are you ready for the August Edition of PROP JUNKIE of the month?

Well take a seat, pour yourself a cup of yummy latte, and enjoy meeting Heather Barta, and her plethora of props and adorable child & family photography!

1) So Ms Heather … lets introduce YOU and get the junkies here at PI swooning over your work , as I have ! What is your photography site, blog, and any other sites you own that you’d like to share with us?

http://www.hbartaphoto.com”
http://www.heatherbartaphoto.blogspot.com”
http://www.facebook.com/pages/Heather-Barta-Photography/

(photo credit for profile pic: linabell photography)

2) We always like to hear a nice success story, so tell us… how did YOU get started in the photography business, and when?
I really never planned to be a photographer! I always liked photography but it wasn’t my first choice for a career path. I went to school to be a RN and worked part-time doing both nursing and photography until last year when my business took over! Like so many other photographers the obsession started when I had my first son three years ago. After finding natural light photography, I was in love and there was no turning back. I was so clueless when I bought my first dslr but I was bound and determined to take good photos with it! I spent every extra moment I had reading online on what aperture, shutter speed, ISO and white balance were. I even had to draw out charts so it all made sense! I practiced on anyone that would allow me to. I did a few free newborn shoots to get some practice and from there I started getting referrals, the rest is history!

3) And we have to ask, our typical question…… WHAT DO YOU SHOOT WITH, and what is your favorite lens?
I have a Nikon D700 and I mainly use my 50mm 1.4f and my Nikon 70-200mm 2.8f. I love how I can get close up to kiddos with the 50mm, plus it’s so sharp and fast. The 70-200mm 2.8f creates the most beautiful smooth backgrounds and it’s great for zooming in on busy toddlers or kiddos that aren’t super into getting their photo taken.

4) On your blog (and site), you cover babies, families, newborns, etc… what is your favorite subject, and why?
I think my favorite subjects are families. I LOVE capturing families interacting together and getting those candid shots of everyone in the moment. I try to think about the type of shots I would want with my little boys when I am doing a family session. I love when emotion is carried through in an image and it can take you back to that very moment in time. I also love newborns, they amaze me at every session- can’t get over what a miracle they are.

5) My favorite thing about your work is your use of the ‘every day’ prop… things that are simple to find but alot of times over looked. For instance…the little girl with the bucket and lemons in hand… PRIMO! Tell us more about this technique and how you choose props for your sessions.
I have spent countless hours searching antique stores, consignment shops and even Target (actually pretty much anywhere I go these days I am prop shopping) for great props. I would describe my style as modern with a vintage twist to it. I love the vintage look with a touch of the latest trends and fashions. I kind of get obsessed about color combinations, I love anything that is visually pleasing to the eye.

6) Do you have a favorite “PROP SHOP” that you regularly work with? Please share…
I LOVE etsy of course! A few I have worked with lately are polkadotposh and cranberriesandcapers. I have way too many newborn hats and headbands to count and I am always adding to my collection. I also like to look to home décor magazines for inspiraton. I love westelm, ikea and potterybarn. I have found props and newborn blankets at all of these stores!

7) I see that you shoot alot on location, do you have a studio as well?
I do! I share a natural light studio in a commercial building about 5 minutes from my home. After having a home studio for a year and a half I decided to venture out and try out a commercial space, so far it has been a great success. I love the hardwood floors and large windows. We also have a sitting area, office, prop corner and newborn feeding/changing room.

You had a great session, with LOTS of props for your twin clients… how did that go? Any advice you can offer to use photoogs looking to work with twinkies?
Thanks! I have done a handful of newborn twins and loved it! I made sure to plan ahead and buy the props I would need so I had matching or coordinating hats etc. I also made sure I had an assistant photographer that day to help out. I honestly do not recommend doing twins by yourself, I bet it can be done but it would be so hard! It is nice to have an extra set of hands with posing and soothing the babies. I also had to make sure the buckets I had set out for the session were going to be big enough to fit both babies comfortably. As with any newborn session, a 90 degree room and a noise machine goes a long way!

9) As photographers are curious, and we love to brag about our mentors… so who are a few fellow photographers whose work you adore?
I am constantly inspired by other photographers. Just a few that I love are meg borders, simplicity photography, oh so posh photography and at play photography. I consider myself part lifestyle even though I have a studio set-up. I like to look at lots of different types of photography so that I am not inspired by just one style or idea.

10) What would you call your personal style. Are you a vintage chicka, or a modern diva… maybe a home town girl?!
Yep, home town girl for sure. My studio is located close to my home and that is one of the things I like most about it. Clients usually come to me even for outdoor sessions. I have my little spots I use that are close by. I have traveled to the city for photo sessions but quickly learned that it’s just ‘not me.’ I would pick a field of long grass at sunset over a bustling city any day.

11) You seem to be a goddess of catchlights. So many of your pictures have these fabulous sharp and detailed catchlights in the eyes. Can we call you “catchlight obsessed” (and if so… love it!!!!)
I think when I started out doing photography I would look at other people’s work and wonder “how the heck do they do that?” Now it just comes so natural to me and it’s really not something I think about constantly through the session. A good location with open, even lighting at the right time of day is priceless. I used to try and book sessions mid-day and use shady areas but quickly learned that there is no substitute for great evening light!

12) Any fabulous information you can “share” with fellow photographers, just starting out?
Before you get out of your car to meet the client take 10 deep breaths, turn up your music for a couple of minutes and try to relax. I used to get so nervous before sessions that I wouldn’t get the right shot or the kids wouldn’t cooperate etc. I couldn’t be in the moment and capture what I wanted to get if I was trying too hard. Now I clear my head before sessions, I leave the stressors of the day at home and I go with what I feel is right during the session. I think if you are relaxed, families/kids will be relaxed too. Another trick I use for kids ages 2-5 is I have a zebra puppet that I make ‘eat’ my camera. I tell the kiddos to watch him because he is really hungry and make sure he doesn’t get me/the camera… works every time. I also am not afraid to make a fool of myself, I have been known to make weird noises, jump around and even pretend to run and trip over something all in an effort to get genuine smiles out of kiddos.

13) Who are YOU? Other than a photographer.. are you a mother, wife, other sort of artist?
I am a mommy to my two little boys, Collin (almost 3) and Hudson (just turned one). I have been married for just over four years to a wonderful, hard-working man. I love decorating (obsessed with home goods and TJ maxx), coffee, my children’s sweet little smiles, hot summer nights and the lake. I have the best life and I feel so incredibly blessed to be doing something I love!

This June, we have a special photographer who has my heart in her hand when it comes to photography and the use of props in her sessions. The wonderful Katie Moss of Peekaboo Photos!!
So without hesitating… here is Katie… I know you’ll enjoy!

1) Dear Ms Katie… please share with us your site(s) so we may begin to drool…
www.peekaboophotos.com (site & blog)

2) Your work is simply beautiful and always eye capturing, how did YOU get started in the photography business, and when?

I was majoring in Graphic Design in college and photography classes were part of the requirement. I got hooked immediately. Soon I started doing product/commercial work for a company my husband worked for. After I had my first baby I quit and we started Peekaboo Photos out of our basement.

3) And we have to ask… WHAT DO YOU BOTH SHOT WITH, and what are your favorite lenses?

These days we shoot with a Nikon D700. 95% of the time use the 50mm 1.4 in the studio.

4) You obviously love working with children… do you have a favorite age group, and why?

6-7 months-olds are the best. They’re sitting up and happy. 12 to 18 month-olds are the most difficult.

5) You have ALOT of darling shots featuring very boho chic outfits. Do your clients bring these outfits, or do you have them ready for use for clients?

Many of our clients bring great outfits but we have several racks of options that we’ve accumulated over the years for people to use… and it grows every month.

6) Do you have a favorite “PROP SHOP” that you regularly work with? Please share…

We buy props from so many different places online and from local antique stores. We also buy backdrops from several location but we’re really loving the latest backdrops from PepperLu. We also use their floor mats in almost every shot.

7) Do you have a studio, and if so.. where is it? In your home, in a retail spot?

Our studio is in the basement of our home. We built the home around the studio so it has a separate entrance and was designed specifically to be a photography studio.

Out of all the darling props you showcase in your portfolio… do you have a FAVORITE prop?

The flower ottoman that I got from PepperLu.

9) Now I know this is the hardest of the questions on your interview… but do you have a fellow photographer whose work you greatly admire, and peek at on a regular basis? ?

There are several that I follow but my close friend Skye Johansen is very creative and has a unique look that is quite different than mine. We have group of about 5 or 6 of us that get together often for dinner to hang out and talk about ideas.

10) Any fabulous information you can “share” with fellow photographers whom are just starting out?

Knowing the technical stuff is important. But it’s not nearly as important as being creative and being good with the kids. It takes a lot of patience and energy.

11) Who are YOU? Other than a photographer.. we know you are a wife… are you also a mother, trapeze artist (lol), other sort of artist?

Mother to 3 beautifully different girls. Wife to a talented and driven husband. I love to snowboard, ski, wakeboard, and fun fun with my kids.

This months Photographer and Prop Junkie of the Month is a personal favorite of mine… her creativity is endless, and her style is boundless, the busy bee herself Michelle Chandler!

Moments to Remember Photography is a prop junkies dream photographer, at the best! So without further hesitation… lets introduce our May POM!

1) So Ms Michelle, busy bee… lets introduce YOU and get the junkies “in” on your work! What is your photography site, blog, and any other sites you own that you’d like to share with us?
Well….My main website is www.mymomentstoremember.com. From there you can navigate to one of my 4 sites. I have 4 sites because I feel like every type of photography ranging from weddings, to families, to hip high school seniors, don’t want to be lumped in the one category. I want to provide a feel for that specific category with music and site ambiance that reflects the style of pictures I’m taking and trying to sell. I currently have a family site that houses samples of families, children, and newborns. My 2nd site is my High School senior site that is very hip and wild. I have a love stories, wedding site that makes you immediately fall in love all over again. Lastly I have my blog site. My blog is a journal of most jobs that come through the studio. This is one of my favorite sites out of all my websites. It’s a LOT of work maintaining all of our sites and social networks, but well worth our time. We also have a Facebook dedicated to Moments To Remember. Did you say Busy Bee? Thank god for good staff that can help maintain this stuff!

2) Your photography leaves me drooling…. how did YOU get started in the photography business, and when?

Well, I’ve started life early married at 18 and started having kiddos at 19. I did everything BUT photography actually. From the age of 19 I have owned and operated an accredited in home daycare/preschool, Busy Bees Daycare. I have ran my daycare for 13 years now. I still currently run my daycare as I run my studio. I just have LOTS of staff backing what I envision and do. I got into photography 3 years ago when my husband bought me a camera and Photoshop. He knew that anything I wanted to do and set my mind to, I was going to do and do well. I wanted NOTHING to do with that big intimidating program and camera. I do things in life because I want to and love what I’m doing and I was not sold on that camera right away. Well, I slowly started taking classes on Photoshop and just started practice shooting and I IMMEDIATELY fell in love. With my daycare background and contacts they quickly got me into places I needed to go in my small community. Within 3 mos I was taking on preschool commercial jobs. I worked by myself for about 1.5 years until I stared getting smart. I realized I can only do so much and I would eventually end up burning out. I also knew that if I hired staff to help it freed up my time to grow bigger. That’s EXACTLY what happened. 1.5 years ago I hired my sister FT to come in and assist me and the rest was history. She is my world. We are literally joined at the hip. She is our FT editor and goes out on EVERY session, big or small with me. In all we have about 8 staff helping me make this production happen. I also have 2 amazing marketing directors who help me tremendously. It’s quite a production we run, but it’s amazing.

Barely 3 years later, I’m doing weddings seniors, newborns, families, kids and a TON of magazine and commercial work. Most days I just have to pinch myself thinking this is just a dream and I’m going to wake up. Photography has done so well that I am getting ready to open doors on a 5500SF studio this summer on my property here in Yuba City, 1 hour North of Sacramento, CA. So I went from not any interest in that camera to picking it up, falling in love and 3 years later making an AMAZING career out of it. I am so very blessed. This shows you if there is a will, there is a way. I had many sleepless nights designing my websites, building my business plan, and portfolio. So this career didn’t come cheap. It did take a LOT of effort. But the rewards are astonishing.

3) And we have to ask, our typical question…… WHAT DO YOU SHOT WITH, and what is your favorite lens?

I’m a Canon girl. I have EVERY camera on the Canon line up. Yes every one. Remember this is supposed to be a hobby for me. Daycare is my real job. So every penny went straight back into my business purchasing props and equipment and my building. Out of every camera in the line up, I love my 7D the very best. Yes I have my amazing 1DS Mark 2 $7,000 camera and do I use it. NO! I love my cheap little Canon 7D $1500 camera. I feel it had amazing focus points and technology. The ISO factor is just insane also. I can crank that baby up to 6400 at times and it saves my life. I frequently use it at 3200 and see little noise. Love it so much I have 2. My favorite Lens ,hmm… thats a hard one. I have them all too. I would have to say if I had to choose only 1 it would be the 24-70 2.8. In my 3 years, I listened to what everyone else recommended as I was learning. BIG MISTAKE. 80% of my equipment I’ll never use. They were things people said I needed, but in hind sight really didn’t if I knew better. Good lesson learned, camera sites and stores will try and sell you anything.

3 B ) Do you use mac or PC?

In my studio My hubby was IT for the city, so we were a PC family. Well 1.5 years into it I figured out PC is NOT the way to go. Constant Crashing and many frustrating days I decided to try mac. Once I tried it I fell in love. I own now 4 macs in my studio for our editing needs. The ONLY way to go in my opinion.

4) On your blog (and site), you cover babies, families, newborns, etc… what is your favorite subject, and why?
Newborns and Weddings. Newborns… they are my LOVE. I went away to Kelly Ryden last January to learn my trade. I got SO tired of not knowing how to do the newborn thing. I had a few choices in trainers, but I LOVED the feeling I got from those 2 sisters. I knew it was them that I wanted to train me. Once I got back from training, the rest was, again as I say it, history. I LOVE newborns. My sister and I work seamlessly as a team making every session amazing. Our work is displayed in almost every OB office and in our local labor and delivery/post pardom units of the hospital. My goal is to be doing 1 newborn per day.

I also equally love weddings. The main reason is it’s a challenge for me. It’s a COMPLETE and total thrill. It pushes me and my staff to the limit and makes me do the best that I’m capable of. This is where we SHINE. The 2nd reason I love weddings is it melts my heart seeing the love these people have and being able to capture that for them. There is NOTHING else like seeing that through my lens and capturing their special day. On weddings we go out with a staff of at least 4b. I have my own personal wedding coordinator who gathers people and manages our day. I have a lighting crew who lights me and the bride and grooms world up, and then there is me and my sister. She poses my lovely couple perfectly and I shoot. It’s a seamless process on what could be a stressful day. Having proper staff makes things stress free and run smooth for everyone. I love it!

So, we are doing it all…. families, kids, commercial, high school seniors, and I LOVE them all! I’d just have to say newborns and weddings are my favorite.

5) Because you have such a wide range of subjects, do you have a favorite prop that you use in most sessions? Or what are your favorite props for each age group?

Nope there is no one prop I use every session. My studio that is under construction is FILLED with chairs, couches, boxes, baskets, custom kids clothes, and the list goes on. I am a PROP QUEEN. Like I said every penny of what I’ve made has went into my studio in the form of props and equipment. People laugh at me actually. I have my own flower makers and hat makers for the studio. They provide me with some of the most amazing and unique pieces ever! I have about 500 custom flowers for the hair and over 100 newborn hats in our inventory. I’m a lucky girl! My clients love us so much because we assist them in accessorizing themselves for sessions. Clothing and accessories are hard choices, so we help make their job easier.

6) Do you have a favorite “PROP SHOP” that you regularly work with? Please share…

I LOVE ETSY, it’s my favorite. I don’t have much time anymore for prop shopping, so I have my custom makers who come to the studio and help figure out a plan for new items. My hat maker makes me any and every kind of hat for children of any age. She also makes custom blankets, cocoons, and wraps. I have a vision and she sees it through. I LOVE her! My FAVORITE places to find chairs and baskets for sessions is antique stores. I buy NOTHING new. YUK!!! it all has to be vintage and interesting.

Another vendor we work with is Dianira Soto, whos product is pictured below!
I also love Pro Photo Backdrops. I have a TON of their backdrops that look very realistic. Honestly most of the time I have a hard time finding what I want, so I make a lot of things. For instance, this week I just made a ton of new newborn boxes because I knew I’d never be able to find them. Sometimes making things from scratch are the best finds ever!

7) I see that you shoot on location, and in studio… tell us a bit about your studio.?

We shoot on location in Yuba City. We have about 50 private locations that we have to choose from, dependent on the client’s vision and style. 95% of my shooting happens outdoors/on location. I shoot a lot on my 2 acres. but that sometimes gets old. My studio is currently in my home and is overflowing. This is where I house offices for staff and most supplies and some props. It’s organized, but in my home. I can HARDLY wait until I can move all of this stuff to the studio in the summer. I shoot all newborn sessions indoors in my studio though.

And your PRIVATE WILDFLOWER LOCATION… how did you come across that, if you can share? It’s just DELICIOUS, and a perfect setting! Is it actually outside? And do you use OCF?
It’s one of our limited edition locations. I am lucky enough to have permission from the owners to use it. Its only about 4 houses down from mine, so we have very easy access to this location. It’s probably my favorite location ever and the flowers are only in bloom for about 2 months. When those flowers go up we are out their daily until the farmers mow them down. Now that is a sad day. Yes I use off camera flash. I went to a very extensive flash training through Nichole Van last summer and she changed my life. I have no limitations on my work now that I use flash. I LOVE it. The way we use flash is not any normal way either. It’s quite a mystery actually. It’s breaking all the rules of photography law as I knew it, but that’s why i love it so much. It’s so challenging and you must really think about what your trying to accomplish. Anyone who has the chance should go train with NIchole Van.

9) As photographers are curious, and we love to brag about our mentors… so who are a few fellow photographers whose work you adore?
.
Well Nichole Van, she has been my idol friend and mentor. I have been to 2 of her trainings and they have both changed my world. She is not only a trainer, but she is a friend. If I have a question no matter how famous nic V has become she is always there to answer my silly Q’s. She is just amazing.

Kelly Ryden also has changed my world through training. Kelly Ryden’s Newborn training changed everything for me. I can’t thank them enough for what they have done for me.

10) What would you call your personal style. Are you a vintage chicka, or a modern diva… maybe a home town girl?!

I’m a hometown girl who wears her cowgirl boots daily, BUT I am a fashion diva at the same time. I love clothes, bling, and shopping.

11) Those newborn twins you recently photographed… SWOON! Tell us a bit about that shoot.. how did you manage to get two teeny babes to cooperate for such an AMAZING SHOOT!!!

Well it was the grace of god. lol. No seriously… It was not bad at all. There is one thing I have learned from training and practicing is CONFIDENCE. If you walk into that session knowing your going to rock it you will. If you walk in scared, the baby will smell your fear and eat you alive. So the twins to be honest they were easy. I did have 3 sets of hands, mine included, helping with this session. But it went REALLY smooth. I know you didn’t want to hear that but it is what it is. lol.

12) Any fabulous information you can “share” with fellow photographers, just starting out?
Don’t be intimidated by bigger photographers. Don’t compare yourself to them. The best thing you can do for yourself is find your own style, do it and do it well. DON’T buy what people tell you that you should have! KNOW what you need it and WHY you need it. Otherwise you’ll be like me with an 80% unused equipment rate. Don’t be afraid to ask for help from fellow photographers, But don’t be surprised if some/most won’t help you. I found a lot of photographers were not very helpful. I never want to be that photographer. I try to help every person who e-maills and calls in. DON’T expect others to teach you. YOU have to go out there and get it. almost 100% of what I know today is self taught, as again, most photographers are not willing to help ya out. sad. So push forward get online and PRACTIC,E and you soon will become amazing at what you do.

13) Who are YOU? Other than a photographer.. are you a mother, wife, other sort of artist?

I am a spunky go getter. I’ve been married since I was 18 and now I’m 32 years old. I sadly enough, am about to finalize my a divorce this spring. The good thing is we are on amazing terms and he has helped me be the person I am today. So I wouldn’t change one thing. It was just not in the cards for us to be together. So at 32, I am single, have 2 beautiful kids 11&13 and have an amazing studio about to open. I have my ENTIRE life still ahead of me. I am happier now than I’ve ever been and can’t wait to see what the future holds. I love spending time with my kiddos and love hanging with girlfriends. Now that I’m single, I will be doing a TON of traveling in 2011. Doing things I’ve never done before. I’ve been pretty locked down for 13 years, so who I am has been kinda boring. Just now am I coming to life. So LOTS of shopping, shooting, fun, and traveling are in my forecast for 2011.

14) Lastly… any fun or extraordinary talent, or obsession, that you’d like to share with us? IE: can you touch your tongue to your nose, or do you snowboard, maybe run marathons?

No extraordinary talent per say. Just my drive and ability to make whatever I set me heart to happen – actually happen. If I’m excited about something it’s gona happen. I have a huge ability to juggle many things too I guess as I run my daycare and a full studio. Besides that my life is not too exciting and no special talents. lol.

Thanks so much and have a wonderful day!

Your photography is full of props, L.O.V.E. your work!!!!…. So tell us, how did YOU get started in the photography business, and when?
I studied film and television in college so I think that the transition to photography was natural for me, since some of the fundamentals are the same like lighting and composition. When I started having kids, it was important for me to document their stories and milestones, and have lots of great pictures to share with them of their growing up years, like my mother had done for me. I have enjoyed photography for 8 years now, but just started my business two years ago. I am still learning and growing everyday! I love the challenge that each session brings, and getting to know each child, newborn or family that I get to work with.

And we have to ask, our typical question…… WHAT DO YOU SHOOT WITH, what is your favorite lens, and what do you use to edit your photos?
I am a natural light photographer and I shoot with a Nikon D3s and a Nikon D300s. My favorite lens is the 24-70mm f/2.8, and my second favorite is my 50mm f/1.8. I shoot in RAW in do all my photo processing in CS3.

Sifting through your blog, we see a lot of newborns… would you consider them your favorite subject, and why?
I sure do love those little babies! But I love all ages of children for different reasons. Newborns are the most difficult for me to photograph and take the most time and patience, but they are also the most rewarding. There is just something magical about a brand new baby, and each shot is so meaningful and precious. I also love the creative freedom of newborn sessions. I love coming up with new ways to use props and add color and position the baby. I also love 6-month-olds because they just sit there and smile and can’t crawl away, and I love one-year-olds because their personalities are starting to develop and they are so busy and entertaining. My heart is definitely with the children, that’s why they are my specialty.

Your pictures are so bright and colorful… they simply POP with color! How do you choose what colors and prop you will use to bring your photos to life?
For newborn sessions, I start planning and preparing as soon as I get the call from the parents-to-be (about 2-4 months before baby’s due date). We talk about their style, baby’s gender, any colors they have already incorporated into baby’s nursery, any props they plan to bring from home, etc. Then I get to work! I start putting together backdrops, floors, blankets, buckets, wraps, hair accessories, hats, and shopping for new things. When parents don’t have a color palette in mind and grant me creative freedom, I am in heaven! I love to try non-traditional and unique color combination using props and backdrops. Child sessions are much easier, and don’t require as much detailed planning. I just look through the clothing options my client brings to the session and choose which backdrops and floors will compliment their wardrobe. Child sessions are fun and fast!

Speaking of props, do you have a favorite prop that you use in most sessions?
I always use some type of bucket or basket in every newborn session. I love babies in buckets! I also like to use fun, colorful, whimsical hats in every newborn session. My clients love all the hats I have out and available for their session. They enjoy playing dress up with their babies as much as I do. Some other props that I use a lot for posing newborns include a beanbag (from Target), a boppy pillow, and a rolled up towel.

Now with all the props you have, do you have a favorite “PROP SHOP” that you regularly work with? Please share and brag about them…
I have so many talented and crafty friends that make amazing hats, headbands, and other props that I use. They each have a unique style and are so great to work with. Feel free to check out all my crafty friends, but don’t make them so busy they can’t make fun things for me! J/k

We see lots of yummy studio shots…. do you have a studio, or do you shoot on location?
I have a small home studio, full of yummy natural light. I do all my sessions at my home studio so I am in complete control of the climate and the lighting conditions. Plus, I have WAY to much stuff to take with me on location!

You have so much, we have to ask.. WHERE DO YOU STORE YOUR PROPS!?
Lol, you must have a giant studio, or a storage container girl!
I do have a lot of props, and more seem to find their way into my home everyday! I find creative ways to store my props in my small space. Some of my trunks and wooden crates decorate my home when they aren’t in use, I have ottomans in the living room with hidden storage inside, I keep all of my backdrops in my coat closet, and everything else has it’s place in the garage.

As photographers are curious, and we love to brag about our mentors… so who are a few fellow photographers whose work you adore?
There are so many amazing and talented photographers out there, but Kelley Ryden and Tracy Raver, and Carrie Sandoval were the first newborn photographers I ever saw. They each inspired me to start my own journey as a natural light photographer, and their work continues to inspire me.

What would you call your personal style. Are you a vintage chicka, or a modern diva… maybe a home town girl?!
Truth be told, I have no personal style. I spend so much time focusing on my family and my business that my personal style takes the back seat. I tried to go clothes shopping for my birthday this year, and all I came home with was props. Yes, leave it to me to find props at the clothing store. I wish I had more of an eye for fashion and home decorating, but since I don’t, I keep things simple. If anyone would like to volunteer to be my personal stylist, that would be great!

All of those fabulous backdrops… They are all so delicious, and I love that you aren’t afraid to use colors and patterns!
I do love color and pattern! Especially during the cold dreary winter months, playing with color helps keep me away from the winter blues. All my backdrops are real, I don’t ‘Photoshop them in’. I get that question a lot. I have used anything and everything for backdrops: seamless paper, vinyl drops, paper drops, cloth, fabric, wood, bead board, and even shower curtains. I see things that would make incredible backdrops everywhere I look! That’s probably why I have so many.

Any super duper fabulous information you can “share” with fellow photographers, just starting out?
Develop your craft, do your homework, find the light, practice, practice, practice, and never give up. We all have good days, bad days, good sessions, and not-so-good sessions. But if you are constantly improving, getting better, learning and moving forward, you will find success.

Who are YOU? Other than a photographer.. are you a mother, wife, other sort of artist?
I am a mother with two amazing children (8 and 4 years old), a supportive husband, and lots of friends and family who love and support me no matter what. I am also a designer. When I am not taking pictures or editing, I love to design albums, birth announcements, holiday cards, birthday invitations, or re-design my blog. One thing I am NOT, is a cook. I used to cook all the time, but since I started devoting more time to photography, cooking is one thing I have completely given up.
